Hopefully below you will find most of the answers to the common questions about Fortress Mail. If not send an email to
admin(at)fortressmail.com and we can add it.
- Will Fortress Mail work with any Email account?
No. At the moment the product will only work with POP3 programs such as Microsoft Outlook Express ® or Microsoft Outlook ®.
Other email programs will only work with Fortress Mail if you collect your mail through POP3. It is possible to collect Hotmail and Yahoo Webmail
through a POP3 client; in these cases you can use Fortress Mail. We are working on integrating Fortress Mail with
Webmail solutions, such as Hotmail and Yahoo mail.
- Do I have to move my Email account to Fortress Mail?
No. Your email account stays exactly where it is. People sending to you and receiving email from you will not notice
much of a change.
- Do I have to install any software?
No. You don't need to install any software, if you can read this page you have a browser, which is all the software you need. You will still
pick-up your email through Outlook, or whichever mail client you use.
- Can I use more than one Email account?
Yes. The Home User package, which is the entry level, allows for one email account. If you want Fortress Mail to protect more email accounts
you can subscribe to our other packages, which allow between 3 and 20 email accounts.
- Is there a limit to the number of SPAM Emails I can receive?
Yes. It is not possible to provide unlimited bandwidth or an unlimited number of SPAM email allowance. Just because you have Fortress Mail it does not mean
you can subscribe to every SPAM mailing list. We run a fair use policy and our product is aimed at professional or domestic users, not abusers. If your email
bandwidth increases you have the option to upgrade to a higher bandwidth. Our top bandwidth package should be more than adequate for a single email account.
Any user that continually abuses the system will have the service removed without refund; this way we keep an efficient service and product for our
legitimate users.
- What happens if I exceed the limitations of my package?
We will send you an invitation to upgrade your package. If you do not upgrade and you continue to exceed the number of mails you are
allowed your account will be terminated without refund. Our service is for legitimate users, who should have no problem with the bandwidth's available.
- Is the Fortress Mail service secure?
As a rule email is an insecure service due to the protocols it uses on the Internet. When you normally
collect your email
your user name and password is sent across the Internet in clear text. All the contents of your emails
are also sent across the Internet in clear text.
Fortress Mail uses
the same protocols that every other email services use and does not apply any additional security. For this reason we are as
secure as most other service providers. Although our service is not designed to stop viruses, all the emails we collect for you will be scanned for
viruses before they are forwarded to you. Users are still advised
to have their own Anti-virus software as we do not offer virus protection as a guaranteed service, merely an additional benefit of
Fortress Mail.
- Will any of my Email addresses or details be used for anything else?
No. As we are registered under the Data Protection Act we are prohibited under UK law from releasing any email addresses or any other
information relating to any of our customers. We are in the business of stopping SPAM, not adding to it. Your email addresses and email details
will not be made available to anyone else unless we are forced to do so by a police investigation.
- Will I ever get spam again?
The majority of SPAM is sent automatically by computers and as such will not be able to
validate themselves. You will not get SPAM from these computers. However there are some spammers
that either send SPAM manually or look at returned SPAM manually. These few spammers could
validate emails. However you will be able to delete their validated email and blacklist it
without ever reading or downloading it. You may get the occasional SPAM if you accidentally
accept one that has been manually validated, however these cases will be rare.
- How do I receive emails from automated systems or mailing lists?
Lets say you want to subscribe to a news update list at ww.bbc.co.uk. You have no idea which
email at bbc.co.uk will send you an email. With Fortress Mail you can use Wildcards, so if you
put *@bbc.co.uk, then you will automatically receive all emails sent from the BBC. However
never put *@hotmail.com or *@yahoo.co.uk as these addresses are often used for spamming. If you forget
to put the wildcards in your address book, you can always go to your 24 hour queue and have the email
delivered and added to your address book.
